Spiralite Charm Prototype
Do you know “Spiralite”? It is a fossil shell formed in the sea over 100 million years ago. Over the years, parts of the shell has been covered in quartz druzies, making it a combination between a shell and crystal. A surprising fact is that Spiralite originates from India. Can you imagine that the Himalayan Mountains were once part of the sea?
The student then applied wax to the Spiralite, to create a charm prototype for casting. After applying the wax, you carefully peel it off, and cast the shape. We can’t wait to see what it looks like in sterling silver!
An amazing project, where only your imagination sets the limits!

These are 925 sterling silver earrings.
If you take a close look, you will notice that the left and right are different…
This is what it looks like wearing them. Cute, isn’t it?
Actually, this is the reuse of old silver scrap. When you are working with metal, you get a lot of small pieces left over from sawing and cutting. Eventually you accumulate many of these little scrap pieces, and they end up somewhere in the corner of your toolbox. But try to organize your scrap pieces and separate the silver, gold or other metals. Also make sure to separate any pieces that might have solder on them in a different place, as it’s no good to mix too much solder into the base metals. This will make the metals contaminated, and eventually they will crack more easily.
Our student created these earrings by melting a few scrap pieces at a time to make a number of round objects, then combining the parts and attaching an earring post to complete the piece.
So take care of your metal scrap, as one day it might turn into something beautiful like this!

Ring base and stone
First, we learn to create a ring with a claw setting.
The base of a ring can be made with either wax or metal smithing techniques.
It’s a good learning experience to see the difference in the two working methods.
Ring vice stone setting
When you have your ring base, and stone, we move to the engraving table where we use a magnifying glass or a stereoscopic microscope to set the stone, holding it in a ring vice.
